RESUMEN

This paper revisits Fleeming Jenkin's anonymous review of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, published in the North British Review in June 1867. This review is usually revered for its impact on Darwin's theory of descent with modification. Its classical interpretation states that Jenkin, a Professor of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, made a compelling case against natural selection based on the fact of "blending inheritance" and the "swamping" of advantageous variations. Those themes, however, are strikingly absent from Jenkin's text. They were later read into Jenkin's text by scholars trying to explain how Darwinian selection was reconciled with Mendelian genes and the birth of the Modern Synthesis. While many scholars have tried to measure Jenkin's effect on Darwin, the value of the 1867 review remains unclear. This paper re-examines its content and concludes that Jenkin's "able review" was in fact written by an engineer whose competencies in biology were very low. Focusing on the figure of the shipwrecked white sailor isolated on an island inhabited by Black people, this paper also underlines the racial assumptions behind Jenkin's review. "Blending inheritance" is thus a theme linked to theoretical reworkings on the question of race and skin colors, taking its root in Galton's typology of heredity. Darwin was probably mostly unimpressed by Jenkin's review. The problems raised by the review were not so much "blending inheritance" and "swamping" but a conundrum of problems related to the effects of intercrossing on variation and reversion.

Lipid oxidation is the principal driver of meat and meat product deterioration during shelf life, causing the loss of fresh meat color, flavor, and aroma. Currently, synthetic antioxidants are used to prevent oxidation, but increasing consumer demand for natural ones leaves the industry with few alternatives. In this study, protocatechuic acid (PCA), known to have high antioxidant activity, was evaluated as a potential inhibitor of meat lipid oxidation. For this purpose, the antioxidant capacity and lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibitory activity of PCA were evaluated in vitro, and a set of four experiments was conducted, treating minced meat with water (control), lactic acid (LA), rosmarinic acid (RA) and PCA, at different concentrations (1-12 mg mL-1), depending on the experiment. The potential antioxidant effect of PCA when applied to meat cubes was also evaluated, as well as the potential of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a delivery system for PCA. The in vitro results showed that PCA is a potent antioxidant and an effective LOX inhibitor at 1 mg mL-1. PCA effect on meat lipid oxidation prevention was dose-dependent, and at 2 mg mL-1, it inhibited color change by 50% and lipid peroxidation by up to 70% when compared to water-treated samples, performing better than RA at 0.25 mg mL-1. These results suggest that PCA is a promising molecule to the meat industry as a natural preservative for meat and meat products directly or in a formulation.

In this work, a strategy for dynamically adjusting the upconversion luminescence (UCL) color of NaGdF4:Yb3+/Ho3+/Ce3+/Sc3+ is reported based on a phosphor wheel. It has been demonstrated that the rotation-dependent UCL mainly originated from the regulation of depletion mode for the Ho3+: 5I6 level. Due to the dominant linear decay, a high-pure red UCL is observed under the steady-state excitation. However, as the proportion of the steady-state excitation decreases, the green-red emission intensity ratio gradually increases, followed by the color conversion from red to green. An approximate physical model is proposed to understand the dependence of IG/IR on rotation speed. We not only report a UCL material that shows potential application in velocity sensing but also provide new insights into wheel-based dynamic UCL regulation.

Plumage color is a characteristic trait of ducks that originates as a result of natural and artificial selection. As a conspicuous phenotypic feature, it is a breed characteristic. Previous studies have identified some genes associated with the formation of black and white plumage in ducks. However, studies on the genetic basis underlying the red plumage phenotype in ducks are limited. Here, genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) and selection signal detection (Fst, θπ ratio, and cross-population composite likelihood ratio [XP-CLR]) were conducted to identify candidate regions and genes underlying duck plumage color phenotype. Selection signal detection revealed 29 overlapping genes (including ENPP1 and ULK1) significantly associated with red plumage color in Ji'an Red ducks. ENSAPLG00000012679, ESRRG, and SPATA5 were identified as candidate genes associated with red plumage using GWAS. Selection signal detection revealed that 19 overlapping genes (including GMDS, PDIA6, and ODC1) significantly correlated with light brown plumage in Brown Tsaiya ducks. GWAS to narrow down the significant regions further revealed nine candidate genes (AKT1, ATP6V1C2, GMDS, LRP4, MAML3, PDIA6, PLD5, TMEM63B, and TSPAN8). Notably, in Brown Tsaiya ducks, GMDS, ODC1, and PDIA6 exhibit significantly differentiated allele frequencies among other feather-colored ducks, while in Ji'an Red ducks, ENSAPLG00000012679 has different allele frequency distributions compared with that in other feather-colored ducks. This study offers new insights into the variation and selection of the red plumage phenotype using GWAS and selective signals.

Barley tea, a popular beverage with cultural traditions in East Asia, has long been esteemed for its flavor, aroma, thirst-quenching properties and perceived health benefits attributed to bioactive compounds. This study investigated the nutritional, bioactive, and antioxidant aspects of three commercial naked barley varieties, focusing on the impact of roasting and subsequent steeping for tea. Roasting did not affect total dietary fiber or ß-glucan content. The process reduced sugar content and led to the disappearance of free amino acids, contributing to high levels of acrylamide and color changes. Roasting diminished total phenolic compounds, particularly flavonoids, resulting in reduced antioxidant activity. Metabolite analysis identified compounds in roasted grains that could influence tea flavor and aroma. Roasted barley tea made from these varieties was not a source of dietary fiber or antioxidants, but also contained no acrylamide. Therefore, consumers seeking such benefits from barley are urged to consume whole grain foods.

During the fruit wine production, phenolic acid decarboxylase (PAD) converts free hydroxycinnamic acid into 4-vinyl derivatives that can then react spontaneously with anthocyanins, generating more stable pyranoanthocyanins that are responsible for the color stability of fruit wine. Nevertheless, the low PAD activity in yeast under the winemaking conditions has largely limited the generation of 4-vinyl derivatives. To bridge this gap, we expressed PAD from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens in Pichia pastoris and surface-displayed it on Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As a result, S. cerevisiae surface-displayed PAD (SDPAD) exhibited an enhanced thermal stability and tolerance to acidic conditions. Fermentation experiments showed that SDPAD can significantly increase the content of vinylphenolic pyranoanthocyanins and thus maintain the color stability of blueberry wine. Our study demonstrated the feasibility of surface display technology for color stability enhancement during the production of blueberry wine, providing a new and effective solution to increase the content of vinylphenolic pyranoanthocyanins in the fruit-based wines.

Background: Restorative dentistry aims to reproduce natural tooth shades through resin composites that must be layered to obtain colors, opacities, and translucencies, and therefore, clinical success is operator skill dependent. Aims: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the color shift of single-shade composite restorations before and after dental bleaching. Materials and Methods: Eighty human extracted posterior teeth were restored with four single-shade composites (Omnichroma OM; Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Universal CL; Essentia Universal ES; Venus Diamond One VE) (n = 20 each). Standardized V class cavities were prepared on buccal side. VITA Easyshade V spectrophotometer was used to register VITA color and color coordinates 24 h before (T0), 24 h after (T1), and 1 week after (T2) dental bleaching (Opalescence Boost PF 40%). Color differences (ΔEab) and (ΔWID) were calculated and subjected to statistical analysis. Statistical Analysis: Categorical variables were analyzed using Pearson Chi-square, and data from color coordinates were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's multiple comparison test with Bonferroni correction. Paired t-tests were performed to compare continuous measures between groups and treatment time. Results: Instrumental evaluations revealed statistically significant differences between materials (P < 0.05) with lower values for ES and VE samples followed by CL and OM at T0 and T1. At T2, OM and CL ΔEab values decrease getting closer to ES and VE. Conclusion: Single-shade composites seem to match with the surrounding bleached tooth.

This study presents a colorimetric/electrical dual-sensing system (CEDS) for low-power, high-precision, adaptable, and real-time detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas. The lead acetate/poly(vinyl alcohol) (Pb(Ac)2/PVA) nanofiber film was transferred onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flexible substrate by electrospinning to obtain colorimetric/electrical sensors. The CEDS was constructed to simultaneously record both the visual and electrical response of the sensor, and the improved Manhattan segmentation algorithm and deep neural network (DNN) were used as its intelligent algorithmic aids to achieve quantitative exposure to H2S. By exploring the mechanism of color change and resistance response of the sensor, a dual-sensitivity mechanism explanation model was proposed to verify that the system, as a dual-mode parallel system, can adequately solve the sensor redundancy problem. The results show that the CEDS can achieve a wide detection range of H2S from 0.1-100 ppm and identify the H2S concentration in 4 s at the fastest. The sensor can be stabilized for 180 days with excellent selectivity and a low limit of detection (LOD) to 0.1 ppm of H2S. In addition, the feasibility of the CEDS for measuring H2S levels in underground waterways was validated. This work provides a new method for adaptable, wide range of applications and low-power, high-precision H2S gas detection.

Colors are well studied in bird plumage but not in other integumentary structures. In particular, iridescent colors from structures other than plumage are undescribed in birds. Here, we show that a multilayer of keratin and lipids is sufficient to produce the iridescent bill of Spermophaga haematina. Furthermore, that the male bill is presented to the female under different angles during display provides support for the hypothesis that iridescence evolved in response to sexual selection. This is the first report of an iridescent bill, and only the second instance of iridescence in birds in which melanosomes are not involved. Furthermore, an investigation of museum specimens of an additional 98 species, showed that this evolved once, possibly twice. These results are promising, as they suggest that birds utilize a wider array of physical phenomena to produce coloration and should further stimulate research on nonplumage integumentary colors.

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important public health concern and that may lead to severe neural sequels, such as color vision deficits. Methods: We evaluated the color vision of 10 TBI patients with normal cognitive function using a color discrimination test in a fixed saturation level. We also analyzed computerized tomography scans to identify the local of the brain damages. Results: Four TBI patients that had lesions in brain areas of the ventral visual streams, five TBI patients had lesions inferred in brain areas of the dorsal visual stream, and one TBI patient had lesion in the occipital area. All the patients had cognitive and color vision screened and they had characterized the chromatic discrimination at high and low saturation. All participants had no significant cognitive impairment in the moment of the color vision test. Additionally, they had perfect performance for discrimination of chromatic stimulus at high saturation and similar to controls (n = 37 age-matched participants). Three of four TBI patients with lesions in the ventral brain and one patient with lesion in the occipital area had impairment of the chromatic discrimination at low saturation. All TBI patients with lesions in the dorsal brain had performance similar or slightly worse than the controls. Conclusion: Chromatic discrimination at low saturation was associated to visual damage in the ventral region of the brain and is a potential tool for functional evaluation of brain damage in TBI patients.

Purpose: To characterize features of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) using multicolor (MC) imaging and to assess the differences in CRAO grading between color fundus photography (CFP) and MC image qualitatively and quantitatively. Methods: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional study in the Department of Ophthalmology of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University. In total, 86 acute CRAO patients were included. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), CFP, and MC examinations were taken at baseline. Based on the findings of these three examinations, CRAO was divided into three grades (incomplete, subtotal, and total). Based on OCT grading criteria, we qualitatively compared the ability of grading CRAO by CFP and MC. CRAO patient's visual acuity (VA) was obtained from the initial visit. The retinal thickness was measured by SD-OCT. Superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) were obtained from optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) examinations. Quantitative data were compared across the three acute CRAO subgroups and against three examination findings. Results: MC image had significantly higher power of acute CRAO detection than CFP (P = 0.03). In the same group of CRAO patients, there was no significant difference in VA when comparing OCT with the MC grading system or with the CFP grading system (all P > 0.05). Significant differences in VA were found between the three CRAO subgroups only under MC grading (P = 0.016). In incomplete CRAO patients, significant differences were found in central fovea thickness (CFT) when comparing OCT with the CFP grading system (P = 0.019). In the same group of CRAO patients, there was no significant difference in retinal thickness when comparing OCT with the MC grading system (All P > 0.05). Significance differences in CFT (P < 0.001), innermost retinal layer (IMRL; P < 0.01), middle retinal layer (MRL; P < 0.001), and outer retinal layer (ORL; P = 0.021) were found between the three CRAO subgroups by MC grading. Vessel density of SCP showed a statistically increased as the severity of three CRAO subgroups (P = 0.03), whereas DCP did not have significant differences (P = 0.745). Comparisons were made between the OCT grading method and the MC and CFP grading methods; there is no significant difference in vessel density of SCP and DCP (All P > 0.05). Conclusion: The images obtained by MC are superior to those obtained by CFP in CRAO grading, retinal thickness, and vessel density measurement. MC imaging may be more capable of CRAO grading than OCT. We recommend MC imaging to determine CRAO severity to guide disease treatment and predict visual prognosis.

Saccharina latissima is a brown seaweed used as a food ingredient. The aim of this work was to study possible differences between S. latissima chemical composition, color, mode of cultivation, harvesting period and site and its environmental conditions. Water temperature, salinity, radiation, and fluorescence were monitored in each harvesting site. Chemical composition of S. latissima varied greatly with period and site, with a high content of carbohydrates and ash. Crude protein content varied from 3.7 % to 12.8 %, with a higher concentration observed in wild samples harvested in Bas-St. Laurent (11.1-12.8 %). Cultivated seaweed also presented a high crude protein (12.2 %) and ash (52 % against 27 % in wild samples) concentrations, but crude fiber and carbohydrates concentrations were lower, reaching up to 2.7 and 1.9-fold, respectively, than those in wild seaweeds. S. latissima presented a more intense yellow color in June. A trend of darker and more green-colored seaweeds when cultivated in the end of summer was confirmed. Our results suggest that variations in chemical components and chromaticity of this species are probably affected by complex interactions of environmental conditions.

Introduction: Sorghum plant color is the leaf sheath/leaf color and is associated with seed color, tannin and phenol content, head blight disease incidence, and phytoalexin production. Results: In this study, we evaluated plant color of the sorghum mini core collection by scoring leaf sheath/leaf color at maturity as tan, red, or purple across three testing environments and performed genome-wide association mapping (GWAS) with 6,094,317 SNPs markers. Results and Discussion: Eight loci, one each on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, and 6 and two on chromosomes 5 and 9, were mapped. All loci contained one to three candidate genes. In qPC5-1, Sobic.005G165632 and Sobic.005G165700 were located in the same linkage disequilibrium (LD) block. In qPC6, Sobic.006G149650 and Sobic.006G149700 were located in the different LD block. The single peak in qPC6 covered one gene, Sobic.006G149700, which was a senescence regulator. We found a loose correlation between the degree of linkage and tissue/organ expression of the underlying genes possibly related to the plant color phenotype. Allele analysis indicated that none of the linked SNPs can differentiate between red and purple accessions whereas all linked SNPs can differentiate tan from red/purple accessions. The candidate genes and SNP markers may facilitate the elucidation of plant color development as well as molecular plant breeding.

Background: Sect. Chrysantha Chang, belonging to the Camellia genus, is one of the rare and precious ornamental plants distinguished by a distinctive array of yellow-toned petals. However, the variation mechanisms of petal color in Sect. Chrysantha Chang remains largely unclear. Methods: We conducted an integrated analysis of metabolome and transcriptome to reveal petal coloration mechanism in three species, which have different yellow tones petals, including C. chuongtsoensis (CZ, golden yellow), C. achrysantha (ZD, light yellow), and C. parvipetala (XB, milk white). Results: A total of 356 flavonoid metabolites were detected, and 295 differential metabolites were screened. The contents of 74 differential metabolites showed an upward trend and 19 metabolites showed a downward trend, among which 11 metabolites were annotated to the KEGG pathway database. We speculated that 10 metabolites were closely related to the deepening of the yellowness. Transcriptome analysis indicated that there were 2,948, 14,018 and 13,366 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between CZ vs. ZD, CZ vs. XB and ZD vs. XB, respectively. Six key structural genes (CcCHI, CcFLS, CcDFR1, CcDFR2, CcDFR3, and CcCYP75B1) and five candidate transcription factors (MYB22, MYB28, MYB17, EREBP9, and EREBP13) were involved in the regulation of flavonoid metabolites. The findings indicate that flavonoid compounds influence the color intensity of yellow-toned petals in Sect. Chrysantha Chang. Our results provide a new perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying flower color variation and present potential candidate genes for Camellia breeding.

This comprehensive review explores the intricate interplay of environmental factors, chemicals and genes shaping the flower color and fragrance of Chimonanthus praecox. Genetic and physiological factors control morpho-anatomical attributes as well as pigment synthesis, while environmental factors such as temperature, light intensity, and soil composition influence flower characteristics. Specific genes control pigment synthesis, and environmental factors such as temperature, light intensity, and soil composition influence flower characteristics. Physiological processes including plant hormone contribute to flower color and fragrance. Hormones, notably ethylene, exert a profound influence on varioustraits. Pigment investigations have spotlighted specific flavonoids, including kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside, quercetin, and rutin. Red tepals exhibit unique composition with cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside and cyanidin-3-O-glucoside being distinctive components. STED nanoscopy allows for the direct observation of dynamic processes in living cells and tissues with diffraction-unlimited resolution. Although fluorescent proteins can be used for STED imaging, these labels are often outperformed in photostability by organic fluorescent dyes. This feature is especially crucial for time-lapse imaging. Unlike fluorescent proteins, organic fluorophores cannot be genetically fused to a target protein but require different labeling strategies. To achieve simultaneous imaging of more than one protein in the interior of the cell with organic fluorophores, bioorthogonal labeling techniques and cell-permeable dyes are needed. In addition, the fluorophores should preferentially emit in the red spectral range to reduce the potential phototoxic effects that can be induced by the STED light, which further restricts the choice of suitable markers. In this work, we selected five different cell-permeable organic dyes that fulfill all of the above requirements and applied them for SPIEDAC click labeling inside living cells. By combining click-chemistry-based protein labeling with other orthogonal and highly specific labeling methods, we demonstrate two-color STED imaging of different target structures in living specimens using different dye pairs. The excellent photostability of the dyes enables STED imaging for up to 60 frames, allowing the observation of dynamic processes in living cells over extended time periods at super-resolution.

The aim of this investigation was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the necessity of a white diet during or following a bleaching procedure. This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the PRISMA guidelines meticulously. The research question was: Is a white diet necessary during and/or after a bleaching treatment? In vitro studies or clinical trials reporting the color change in bleached enamel after the use of a free-staining diet were considered for full-text review. For the analyses, a random-effects model was employed. Statistical significance was defined as a p-value < 0.05. A total of 17 documents were eligible for qualitative analysis: 5 clinical trials and 12 in vitro studies. Only data from the clinical trials were included in the meta-analysis. For at-home bleaching, differences in the color among the subjects were not statistically significant during the first (p = 0.64), second (p = 0.26) or third (p = 0.43) weeks of treatment. Also, the color difference one month after finishing the bleaching treatment were not statistically significant (p = 0.27). The color difference one month after finishing an in-office treatment showed that the restrictions on diet did not significantly improve the bleaching outcomes (p = 0.90). According to the findings of this review, dietary restrictions are not necessary during or after bleaching procedures.

Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is a candidate for screening programs because its prognosis is excellent when diagnosed at an early disease stage. Targeted screening of those at high risk for developing CM, a cost-effective alternative to population-wide screening, requires valid procedures to identify the high-risk group. Self-assessment of the number of nevi has been suggested as a component of such procedures, but its validity has not yet been established. We analyzed the level of agreement between self-assessments and examiner assessments of the number of melanocytic nevi in the area between the wrist and the shoulder of both arms based on 4548 study subjects in whom mutually blinded double counting of nevi was performed. Nevus counting followed the IARC protocol. Study subjects received written instructions, photographs, a mirror, and a "nevometer" to support self-assessment of nevi larger than 2 mm. Nevus counts were categorized based on the quintiles of the distribution into five levels, defining a nevus score. Cohen's weighted kappa coefficient (κ) was estimated to measure the level of agreement. In the total sample, the agreement between self-assessments and examiner assessments was moderate (weighted κ = 0.596). Self-assessed nevus counts were higher than those determined by trained examiners (mean difference: 3.33 nevi). The level of agreement was independent of sociodemographic and cutaneous factors; however, participants' eye color had a significant impact on the level of agreement. Our findings show that even with comprehensive guidance, only a moderate level of agreement between self-assessed and examiner-assessed nevus counts can be achieved. Self-assessed nevus information does not appear to be reliable enough to be used in individual risk assessment to target screening activities.

OBJECTIVES: This manuscript aims to understand the association between self-rated health and ethnic-racial characteristics (i.e., skin color, self-ascription, and Indigenous language) in the context of the Mexican population. DESIGN: Logistic regression analyses, using the 2019 PRODER (N = 7187)-a representative survey at the national level. We centered the analysis on two measures of skin color: the interviewer assessment of color skin (that has been used in previous studies), and the ITA scale, a measure constructed from optical digital colorimeter readings (a novel method in ethnoraciality studies in Mexico, included in the PRODER survey). RESULTS: In comparison to the interviewer's assessment of skin color, the ITA score shows a significant association with self-rated health, even in the presence of individual conditions, sociodemographic traits, and life-course events. In contrast, ethnic-racial self-ascriptions and speaking of an Indigenous language do not show any statistical associations. CONCLUSION: Contrary to previous research, our results suggest a positive association between skin color and self-rated health, when the former is assessed with the colorimeter readings; it means that those with lighter color skin are more prone to report a better health perception. It has methodological implications in the way skin color is observed.
